Empowering Youth: A Look Back at the World of Work Fair 2025

Mar 22, 2025 | Our News

On Saturday, 8 March 2025, the Rotary Club of Kenton on Sea Youth Services Committee hosted its inaugural World of Work (WoW) Fair at The Goat Shed. This inspiring event provided local youth with valuable insights into career paths that do not necessarily require tertiary education.

Aiming to Make a Difference

With unemployment rates remaining high in our area, the goal of this event was to expose young adults to diverse employment opportunities within the local community. Twenty students from Grades 10 to 12 from local schools were invited to explore various career paths through direct engagement with industry professionals.

A Wide Range of Career Options

The event featured professionals from seven different sectors, including:

  • Beauty
  • Hospitality
  • Farming
  • Security
  • Retail
  • Tourism
  • Caring Professions

Each career table was manned by professionals who shared their experiences, job requirements, and training opportunities available within their respective fields.

An Engaging and Interactive Experience

The fair was designed to be informal and interactive. Students had the chance to sit down in small groups with professionals, gaining firsthand knowledge of what each career entails. One of the highlights was Chris Barnard, Operations Manager of Hi-Tec Security Coastal, who engaged with eager students at the Security table, discussing career prospects in security and the skills needed to succeed in the field.

At the end of each presentation, students had the opportunity to ask questions, fostering a dynamic exchange of ideas and information. The feedback from both participants and professionals was overwhelmingly positive, with many students feeling inspired to pursue new career paths.

A Successful Start to a Promising Initiative

A huge thank you goes to The Goat Shed Bush Bistro & Bar for providing refreshments and creating a welcoming atmosphere for learning and discussion. We also extend our gratitude to the dedicated members of the Rotary Youth Services Committee, whose hard work made this event possible.

If one word could sum up the event, it would be WOW! With 17 enthusiastic students in attendance and seven career fields represented, the fair was a resounding success. The positive feedback from students and presenters alike reinforces the importance of such initiatives in shaping the future workforce of our community.

Following this successful event, we are excited to plan future fairs, expanding the range of career opportunities showcased and reaching even more students in Kenton and surrounding areas.

We look forward to continuing our mission of inspiring young minds and helping them discover the many possibilities available to them. Stay tuned for more updates on our next World of Work Fair!
