Sandy Smith, coordinator of the Rotary Club of Kenton On Sea’s Kenton Sees Project, extends her sincere appreciation to the Dr Trevor Davies Foundation, Graham Critch Optometrists and their dedicated staff, and the many Rotarians of Kenton On Sea who generously contributed their time and expertise during the eye screening held on Tuesday, 12 May 2026 and Tuesday, 14 July 2026.
Your professionalism, commitment and willingness to serve ensured the smooth execution of the screenings and enabled numerous members of our community to receive essential eye care services.
The final screening day was made even more special by the presence of Rotary District Governor Dr Melonie Gobel, who visited the project during her official visit to the Rotary Club of Kenton On Sea. Dr Gobel was able to witness first-hand the life-changing impact of the Kenton Sees initiative, meet many of the volunteers and patients, and observe the exceptional collaboration between the Rotary Club, the Dr Trevor Davies Foundation, Graham Critch Optometrists and the local community. Her visit was a wonderful affirmation of the importance and success of this flagship community service project.
Across the two scheduled Kenton Sees 2026 screening days, the project achieved the following outcomes:
- 148 patients were screened.
- 115 pairs of spectacles were prescribed.
- 25 patients were referred to specialists in Makhanda (Grahamstown), including:
- 18 patients requiring cataract surgery.
- 8 patients diagnosed with glaucoma or other serious eye conditions.
- Regrettably, one patient could not be assisted surgically due to the advanced stage of cataracts.
Special recognition is extended to the team from Trevor Davies Optometrists in Makhanda for their dedicated efforts in conducting eye examinations, fitting spectacles and facilitating specialist referrals where necessary.
Further appreciation is conveyed to Graham Critch and his team, who consistently provide their services during screening days and remain available to support patients requiring follow-up care between annual screenings.
Collectively, your contributions are making a meaningful difference by restoring vision, independence and dignity within our community. The Kenton Sees Project stands as an outstanding example of Rotary’s commitment to Service Above Self, made possible through the dedication and generosity of every volunteer and partner involved.
Service Above Self.
