Every Rotary project starts with a good idea.
This one started with a cow!
A fellow Rotarian and cattle farmer discovered that his organically fed, pesticide-free, hormone-free cows were producing something rather special — African Gold!
The dung is collected from the pastures, dried under cover, and when there’s a shit load, it’s loaded onto a truck and delivered to Kenton, where it is packed into approximately 30 dm bags and sold to enthusiastic gardeners.
And they LOVE it!
Rotary sells around 360 bags every two months, while approximately 40 bags are donated to community vegetable gardens and the Kenton Beautification Programme.
Our African Gold travels far and wide — from Alexandria, Huis Dias and Jehovah Jirah, through Cannon Rocks, Boknes, Bushmans River, Riversbend, Kenton-on-Sea, Merryhill and Ekupumleni, all the way to Port Alfred.
That little pile of cow dung generates approximately R110,000 a year — all of which goes straight back into our community projects.
And then there was the beetle…
A little beetle was happily going about its business when a bird flew overhead.
SPLAT!
Right on the beetle.
The beetle must have thought:
“Seriously? I already LIVE in manure!”
But that’s the beauty of Rotary’s African Gold Project:
Nothing is wasted — not even the bird’s contribution!
So the next time you see a truckload of what looks like a whole lot of cow shit arriving in Kenton, remember:
It’s not shit.
It’s R110,000 worth of AFRICAN GOLD!
Rotary — turning cow pats into community projects, one shit load at a time!
